# What is the difference between genital herpes and genital warts?

Genital warts and genital herpes are two different sexually transmitted infections caused by different viruses. Genital warts are caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), while genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). 

The physical symptoms of these two infections are also different. Genital warts appear as small, flesh-coloured or grey growths on or around the genitals or anus, while genital herpes causes blister-like sores or ulcers on or around the genitals, anus, or mouth.

Both genital warts and genital herpes are spread through sexual contact, but they differ in their mode of transmission. Genital warts are usually spread through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity, while genital herpes is primarily spread through contact with infected skin or bodily fluids, including saliva, semen, and vaginal secretions.
