# What is genital warts?

Genital warts is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). They are small, flesh-coloured or grey growths that appear on or around the genitals or anus. In men, they can appear on the penis, scrotum, or anus, while in women, they can appear on the vulva, cervix, or anus.

Genital warts can vary in size and shape and can appear as a single wart or in clusters. They are typically painless, but can cause itching, burning, or discomfort, and can sometimes bleed or become irritated. Some people with genital warts may have no visible symptoms, making it possible to transmit the virus to others unknowingly.
