What causes thrush?

Thrush is a common yeast infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans fungus. Candida lives in the body and on the surface of the skin naturally. However, when it multiplies and an imbalance occurs, it can cause an infection.

Women have a higher chance of recurrent genital thrush and are at higher risk if they haven’t finished a full thrush treatment from a previous occurrence, are taking antibiotics, are pregnant, are diabetic, are HIV positive, are an active smoker or use corticosteroids for treating asthma symptoms.
